Our story
Bellewether Bees is the beekeeping company known for consciously-crafted products that promote sustainability. The company was started in 2019 by Chelsee and Ben Schram in Laingsburg, MI. The mission was simple; Furthering Michigan Bees.
To us, Furthering Michigan Bees reflects a commitment to the sustainability of Michigan’s beekeeping community, Michigan’s land and water, and local food systems.
Whether you’re a beekeeper looking for sustainably produced bees, a teacher looking for classroom activities, or a human generally interested in sweet and clean things, please feel free to reach out. We love chatting with folks about what we do and how we do it.
A Land Ethic
At Bellewether Bees, we care about the process as much as as the final product.
In Aldo Leopold’s 1949 A Sand County Almanac, Leopold discusses a concept called a “Land Ethic”. The Land Ethic describes a moral responsibility for all members of a community to treat one-another with a mutual respect.
Our community includes the humans, soil, water, plants, and animals that live and exist around us. We agree with Leopold’s assessment that people and land are intertwined. This moral code of conduct guides our business decisions and daily lives.
